The first thing to properly cleaning an upholstery piece, is to identify the fabric.  Most upholstery these days are either synthetic fibers or natural fibers.  Once the fiber has been identified, the right products are chosen to have the best cleaning results on the upholstery piece.

Here is an example of a synthetic blend fiber that had lots of soil from dogs and high traffic.

The above piece needed to be clean with an alkaline base cleaner in order for the stains to be removed, the results were acceptable considering the sofa had never been professionally cleaned.
